Its name is&nbsp;<em>dystopia<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Science Fiction proposes futures born of present problems: Utopias built from today\u2019s missteps corrected, and dystopias from staying the course. Sexism, though, is not unique to the present\u2014victories for suffrage, opportunity, and bodily autonomy in the wide lens of history are.&nbsp;<em>\"Startlingly, the idea that history always progresses,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;Margaret Atwood stated,&nbsp;<em>\u201cis a fantasy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Atwood penned&nbsp;<em>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em>&nbsp;in 1985, in the midst of the striking swing to the right that threatened the liberatory forward momentum of the 1960s and 70s. Atwood\u2019s novel tapped into the grim urgency and roiling rage brewing in the moment and formalized the Feminist Dystopia\u2014all of which has become more explosive than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This coming season of\u00a0<em>Science on Screen<\/em>\u00a0we explore Feminist Dystopias in cinema, pairing screenings with presentations from women in science on climate change, indigenous methodologies, biology, resource economics, and beyond. The series kicks off with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/film\/mad-max-fury-road-35mm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mad Max: Fury Road<\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>on 35mm, Tuesday, January 17. [READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/letterboxd.com\/ragtag_cinema\/story\/the-future-is-now-here-mad-max-and-dystopian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Future is Now Here: Mad Max and Dystopian Exploitation | Analysis by Tia\u00a0Sarkar<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Running through April,&nbsp;<em>Science on Screen: Feminist Dystopias<\/em>&nbsp;also features&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/film\/slash-back\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Slash\/Back<\/a>, Nyla Innuksuk\u2019s SXSW Midnight debut that pits an alien invasion against four Inuit girls;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/film\/teknolust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teknolust<\/a>, new-media pioneer Lynn Hershman-Leeson\u2019s comedic rework of the cyberthriller starring not one, but four Tilda Swintons; and Rachel Talalay\u2019s unhinged, high camp, cult actioner&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/film\/tank-girl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tank Girl<\/a>&nbsp;on 35mm.
