I\u2019m happy you\u2019re here, engaging with and supporting our beloved arthouse. I wanted to visit with you in this virtual space this week to share my thoughts about a poignant and particularly timely film opening at the Cinema on Friday. One of the things I love about cinema\u2014especially the communal experience of cinema\u2014is how it offers us the space to grapple with and process powerful emotions together. Whether real or constructed, documentary and fiction narratives alike invite you to reflect on the experiences, challenges, and motivations of the characters featured on screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Still-2-700x511.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10760\"\/><figcaption>HAPPENING Still 2<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Audrey Diwan\u2019s new film&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2075\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Happening<\/a>, a young woman is determined that no matter the cost, an unintended pregnancy will not be the end of her goals, her resources, or her potential. This story happens to take place in 1963, in France, but replace the date and location and you\u2019ve got the experience of many, many uterus-having people across the world. Including myself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1963 France, abortion wasn\u2019t legal and wouldn\u2019t be for another 12 years. In 2018, in mid-Missouri, it was legal but not without hurdles. I was 8 weeks pregnant when I confirmed my second pregnancy. I wanted a medical abortion, which wasn\u2019t available locally. I had to drive from Columbia to Kansas City, Kansas, to find care. I had job security, flexibility, and financial stability, not to mention a partner with those same things who could travel with me. That\u2019s certainly not the case for many in that situation. It was still a difficult choice and a difficult process\u2014but it was one I got to make for myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Still-3-700x511.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"10761\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Still-3.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=10761\" class=\"wp-image-10761\"\/><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-item__caption\">HAPPENING Still 3<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While everyone\u2019s experience with abortion is different, there is so much that is universal. To create space to process the thoughts and feelings that&nbsp;<strong><em>Happening<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;evokes, Ragtag is hosting a guided&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/prod5.agileticketing.net\/websales\/pages\/info.aspx?evtinfo=209301~49be0130-fb23-4509-97fb-26b3a5a06701&amp;epguid=a3c9e6bb-8a19-40ce-bc77-d9f4ee679c9d&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">community conversation<\/a>&nbsp;next Monday, May 23rd following the 6:50pm screening. Admission for that evening will be on a pay-what-you-can scale, so I hope you\u2019ll be able to join us and allow the shared experience of cinema to help us process together the devastating fact that Roe v.
