As with\u00a0<em>The Witch<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Lighthouse<\/em>\u00a0before it, Eggers\u2019 meticulous attention to historically-accurate details is only bested by the filmmaker\u2019s respect for the beliefs, fears, and superstitions of the culture portrayed\u2014in short, Robert Eggers makes folklore flesh.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/4179_D086_00013_RC2-700x467.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10737\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While the previous films drew inspiration from the alien and idiosyncratic found diaries of their eras,\u00a0<strong><em>The Northman<\/em><\/strong>\u2019s source material\u2014the ancient legend of Amleth\u2014should be universally recognizable as the template for Shakespeare\u2019s\u00a0<em>Hamlet.<\/em>\u00a0Of course,\u00a0<em>Hamlet<\/em>\u00a0hasn\u2019t necessarily included psychedelic Norse rituals and active volcanoes, but revenge is still the bloody, beating heart at the core of both tales.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accuracy, coming-of-age themes, and reverence for lore also coalesce in Jane Shoenbrun\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2067\" target=\"_blank\">We\u2019re All Going to the World\u2019s Fair<\/a>. Most easily described as\u00a0<em>The Blair Witch Project\u00a0<\/em>for the internet age, the comparisons end at the inventive use of the horror genre and found digital aesthetics; the earnest relatability of Shoenbrun\u2019s film, especially for those whose self discovery was primarily online, might be its scariest feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image_from_ios-700x933.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10738\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, in the spirit of archetypes and adaptations, on Monday evening we screen MGM\u2019s studio treatment of Tennessee Williams' American classic,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2068\" target=\"_blank\">Cat on a Hot Tin Roof<\/a>. It\u2019s the story of a young man in crisis\u2014portrayed iconically by Paul Newman\u2014drinking away the days and giving a slip-clad Elizabeth Taylor the cold shoulder after the death of an old football\u00a0<em>\u201cfriend.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Carrying just as much gay subtext as the Production Code would allow (or, more likely, were painfully oblivious to), Williams\u2019 words, and even the studio\u2019s softening of them, speaks volumes to the chilling effects of social\u2014and personal\u2014repression.\u00a0<strong><em>Cat on a Hot Tin Roof<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is presented, with the support of\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unboundbookfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Unbound Book Festival<\/a>, on glorious 35mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avenge Father, Save Mother, Kill Fj\u00f6lnir,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ted<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Greetings Cinema friends, Tomorrow evening we don our best wolf pelts and head full-gonzo into battle with Robert Eggers\u2019\u00a0The Northman.
