{"id":10678,"date":"2022-02-16T12:39:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-16T18:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/blog\/?p=10678"},"modified":"2022-06-01T13:44:20","modified_gmt":"2022-06-01T18:44:20","slug":"a-word-from-our-programmer-2-16-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/a-word-from-our-programmer-2-16-22\/","title":{"rendered":"A WORD FROM OUR PROGRAMMER 2\/16\/22"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greetings cinema friends,<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tonight,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/series\/82\" target=\"_blank\">Black Independents Vol II<\/a><em>\u2014<\/em>our yearly survey of the varied waves of Black independent American cinema\u2014continues at the Cinema with Kathleen Collins\u2019\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2044\" target=\"_blank\">Losing Ground<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Described by the filmmaker as a comedy about a young woman who takes herself too seriously,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2044\" target=\"_blank\">Losing Ground<\/a>\u00a0finds two married intellectuals\u2014a painter and a philosophy professor\u2014at a creative and romantic crossroads during a summer retreat in Upstate New York. While the film\u2019s lead, Sara (Seret Scott), is engrossed in her research on human ecstasy, her husband (played by\u00a0<em>Ganja &amp; Hess\u00a0<\/em>director Bill Gunn) seems to be finding it effortlessly in his art and with his female models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/losingground-newsletter.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10679\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Kathleen Collins\u2019 film marked the first feature-length drama from a Black woman in the United States since the 1920\u2019s, and despite success on the festival circuit,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2044\" target=\"_blank\">Losing Ground<\/a>\u00a0was never distributed theatrically, all but vanishing after 1982. In 2015, Collins\u2019 daughter rescued the original negative and oversaw its restoration and rerelease, premiering at New York\u2019s Film Society of Lincoln Center. The New Yorker\u2019s Richard Brody spoke to the restoration, \u201chad it screened widely in its time, it would have marked film history.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/jartiz-newsletter.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10680\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tonight\u2019s screening opens with an intimate set from Josh Runnels\u2019\u00a0<em>future soul<\/em>\u00a0group J.ARTiz and MO\u2019 Soul Collective. Runnels hosts the monthly live music and art series Soul Sessions COMO, supporting established and emerging local and national performers and artists, independent vendors, and Columbia\u2019s art and culture community. Between J.ARTiz and Soul Sessions, Runnels seeks to continue inspiring a larger movement of cultural art, Black liberation, and higher consciousness through Afrofuturistic inspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/series\/82\" target=\"_blank\">Black Independents Vol II<\/a>\u00a0continues through February with\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2045\" target=\"_blank\">The Inheritance<\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2046\" target=\"_blank\">Nationtime<\/a>. This Friday the Cannes-breakout and Best International Feature Film Oscar-nominee\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2051\" target=\"_blank\">The Worst Person in the World<\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>opens.
