Today and tomorrow at the Cinema see last-chance screenings for a number of films: Joel Coen\u2019s\u00a0The Tragedy of Macbeth<\/a>\u00a0and Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s\u00a0Licorice Pizza\u00a0<\/a>make their final curtain calls, our\u00a0Passport: Todo Sobre Almod\u00f3var<\/a>\u00a0series continues with\u00a0Volver<\/a>\u00a0on 35mm this evening, and the\u00a0Show Me\u00a0Series<\/a>\u00a0enters its second season with\u00a0Pahokee<\/a>\u00a0tomorrow night, co-presented with Boone County Community Against Violence. Consider clearing your calendar, canceling your appointments, and taking up residence in the hallowed halls of our cinematheque.

Friday sees the openings of two bold international titles: Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u2019s newest,\u00a0Parallel Mothers<\/a>\u2014Friday\u2019s 6pm show features a special introduction from Dr. Michael Ugarte, the Professor Emeritus of Spanish at the University of Missouri\u2014and Radu Jude\u2019s incendiary Romanian satire,\u00a0Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn\u00a0<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romania\u2019s official entry to the 94th Academy Awards and the winner of the Golden Bear at the 2021 Berlin International Film Festival,\u00a0Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn\u00a0<\/a>opens with a bang\u2026 literally. A high school teacher\u2019s private sex tape (featured unsimulated in the film) is uploaded to the internet, leading to a near-military tribunal demanding her resignation. Told over three distinct chapters and stylistic modes, Jude blends daring experimentation, nonfiction, performance, and didactic essay to craft a searing and hilarious portrait of our present and our history. Graphic and consistently shocking, this film is not for everyone, but it\u2019s certainly unlike anything you\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
