Fittingly, this Friday we open a snow-swept, pitch-black prestige picture to warm your bones:\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2028\" target=\"_blank\">Nightmare Alley<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make no mistakes, Guillermo del Toro\u2019s newest is a departure from his standard supernatural fare, dropping his usual horror haunt and instead looking back to the 1940s. Astute students of cinema are likely familiar with the studio-era, Tyrone Power-helmed noir of the same name\u2014a landmark of the genre, standing amongst the likes of\u00a0<em>Detour\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Touch of Evil<\/em>. However, del Toro stakes William Lindsay Gresham\u2019s 1946 novel as the true source material for his\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2028\" target=\"_blank\">Nightmare Alley<\/a>. Regardless, all three versions are steeped in shadowy New York underbellies, mistaken identities, con-men, carnies, and clairvoyants and\u2014in the absence of Guillermo del Toro\u2019s signature affinity for ghouls\u2014find that man is the scariest monster of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/001a_NA_02774_R2.max-2000x2000-2-700x467.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10637\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, certain Cinema friends among us will be thrilled to know that\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2023\" target=\"_blank\">Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time<\/a>\u00a0finally arrives on Friday. Bring a tissue\u2026 and maybe your high-school paperback of\u00a0<em>Breakfast of Champions.<\/em>\u00a0Throughout the week, alternative Christmas classics abound in the leadup to the 25th with shows of\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/1753\" target=\"_blank\">Die Hard<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2027\" target=\"_blank\">Carol<\/a>, and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/1926\" target=\"_blank\">It\u2019s a Wonderful Life<\/a>.
