With these natural phenomena come films a bit more\u2026\u00a0<em>wicked.<\/em>\u00a0Chief among them this year is Julia Ducournau\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/1997\" target=\"_blank\">Titane<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>2021\u2019s Palme d\u2019Or winner at Cannes marks not just the second-ever win for a female director (Jane Campion took the first in 1993 for&nbsp;<em>The Piano)<\/em>, but also the first&nbsp;<em>body-horror<\/em>&nbsp;to take one of cinema\u2019s most distinct honors.&nbsp;<br>So, for the uninitiated, what is body-horror? Somewhere between the Gothic literature of Mary Shelley\u2019s novel&nbsp;<em>Frankenstein&nbsp;<\/em>and Crononberg\u2019s&nbsp;<em>The Fly<\/em>, critic Philip Brophy casually coined the term in 1983.&nbsp;Film scholar Linda Williams defined it precisely; mapping it on a continuum of what she calls \u201cexcess\u201d\u2014the degree to which audience sensations mimic what is seen on screen\u2014alongside pornography and classical melodrama. Melodramas mirror sympathy, pornography arousal, but&nbsp;<em>body-horror<\/em>&nbsp;grants the visceral loss of control of our own bodies\u2014pushing their limits,&nbsp;their transformative capabilities, and their violent distortions.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In more clinical terms: expect to get&nbsp;<em>the willies.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Titane-663x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10577\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That all said, while&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/1997\" target=\"_blank\">Titane<\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>has been dubbed \u201c<em>the most shocking film of 2021,<\/em>\u201d Ducournau is no mere shock jockey. Her 2016 cannibal-coming-of-age tale,&nbsp;<em>Raw,<\/em>&nbsp;is an excellent indicator of her bold approach to spinning ultimately tender stories. Every repulsion mirrored on screen is an act of endearment, after all. So, as I\u2019ve taken a blood oath to divulge as little about&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/1997\" target=\"_blank\">Titane<\/a>\u2019s plot as possible, trust me that this fiery&nbsp;<em>automobile-ad-human<\/em>&nbsp;mystery also manages to be one of the more sincerely heartwarming tributes to parenting and family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The season continues with&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/1990\" target=\"_blank\">Lamb<\/a>&nbsp;opening next week, and special engagements of David Lynch\u2019s&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/1998\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Velvet<\/a>&nbsp;and Andrzej ?u?awski's&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ragtagcinema.org\/films\/2000\" target=\"_blank\">Possession<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Stay weird,Ted<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friends, September draws to a close, and we find ourselves on the precipice of what leading meteorologists and cultural institutions alike refer to as\u2026\u00a0spooky season.
